"Local curry stalwart Sujeeth Kumar from Chutney Mary Tandoori and Curry House established his Ruthven St eatery 10 years ago when Indian food was considered an unusual takeaway option.

He has gone on to collect a bunch of industry awards and a regular client list.

As competition among the curry house heats up, Mr Kumar believes it will be survival of the fittest."

Our Journey

Established in 1996 in Wellington, New Zealand by the name 'Mahal' and later renamed 'Chutney Mary Indian Curry House' by Chef owner Sujeeth Kumar at

115 Queen St, Northcote Point, Auckland.

Sujeeth, a student of Catering Technology and Hotel Management has extensive experience in 5 Star Hotels in Bombay and Ahmedabad. Moving to Australia and establishing the first Chutney Mary Restaurant in Toowoomba on Ruthven St in June 2003 he received an overwhelming response from even the neighbouring shires like Warwick, Stanthorpe, Crows Nest and Gatton.

"The Restaurant has expanded its already extensive menu to include special aerated Teas with spices besides the Traditional fare like Tandoori and Exotic curries, 'Butter Chicken' being one of the crowds favourite."

"Indeed a spicier fare not only is a workout for the taste buds but also an extraordinary culinary treats without which one can never claim to have truly experienced an exceptional cuisine, warm professional friendly service and casual elegance. As the 'Mahathma' truly said, " In business the customer is on the top of all priorities and his demands always come first", we measure customer satisfaction by regular campaigns and food tasting at Supermarkets, shopping Centres and Carnivals. We maintain a high standard among our staff who are specially trained to understand the importance of courtesy, friendliness and above all discipline."

"People now know about cuisines from all over the world," he said.

"They know what is good and what is bad.

"You can't make a fool of the customer.

"Only those with a good knowledge of food will survive."
